Parker left Alessia’s house just before sunrise, and somehow managed to get back on base, shower, and make it to her meeting with Colonel Williams four minutes early. They’d talked most of the night, then Alessia had fallen asleep in her arms. It had been hard to leave her at dawn, and even harder to go down that damn staircase in the dark.

When she was shown in by Allison, the colonel’s assistant, Trobaugh and Hooper were already there, coffee in hand. Colonel Williams stood and handed her the remaining cup of coffee on the edge of his desk.

“No need to stand at attention, Captain Haven. I think we can dispense with that at this point. I had Allison call and speak to your roommate this morning, and she said you take your coffee black?”

“I appreciate that, sir, and yes, black is perfect.”

Parker took the coffee and sat down, pulling the case file from her bag.

“Detectives, let’s start with you.” Williams nodded at Trobaugh and Hooper as they sifted through the papers in their files.

“We knew Captain Haven was headed to the victim’s hotel yesterday,” Trobaugh said, looking around and patting down her pockets until Hooper pulled a pen from the loop on the sleeve of her uniform and handed it to her. “So we showed up at the medical examiner’s office to see what he could tell us about ammunition used or trajectory of the bullet itself.”

“And what did you find out?”

“Haven was right—the round did come from a sniper rifle, and the bullet was McMillan Precision ammunition, which is high end and designed for close- to mid-range hunting.”

“If I had to guess, I’d say the rifle was a McMillian TAC-50,” Hooper interjected. “If you’re familiar with that grade of specialized ammunition, it follows that you’d have a rifle at that level as well.”

Trobaugh pushed her wire glasses up on her nose and pulled a sheet of paper with photocopied images out of her file and handed it to Colonel Williams.

“We inspected it, and the spiral lands and grooves are consistent with the TAC-50, but that’s not much to go on, and unless we recover a firearm that ballistics can test with a comparison microscope, it won’t us get very far.”

“What about the direction it came from?” Williams said, handing the paper back to Trobaugh. “Did the ME give you any clue on where the bullet could have come from?”

“The parking garage.”

Hooper and Trobaugh answered at the same time, and after a quick glance at her partner, Hooper continued.

“Based on the angle and trajectory of the wound, the bullet could have only come from the parking garage just across the street from the airport.”

“We measured and remeasured based on the specifics the medical examiner gave us last night, and went to the crime scene again to get accurate measurements of the parking structure,” Trobaugh said, sketching a rough representation on the back of the paper and holding it up. “And based on that information, we think it’s most likely the center portion of the third level.
